The magic of Mersea Island

If you've heard of Mersea and you're not from Essex, the chances are it's because of the Company Shed. Until it was discovered by restaurant critics seven or eight years ago, this unassuming seafood shack, on the shores of a muddy creek, was something of an insider's secret. For the natives of east London and Essex who converged on this small estuary island at the weekend, it was a place of pilgrimage where they would eat their own bodyweight in oysters, rollmops and prawns, then high-tail it back across the Strood – the ancient Roman causeway that links Mersea to the mainland – before sunset...

We stopped by for a light lunch and a drink and were greeted by a very good menu, including hand battered fish and homemade fishcakes, complemented by a lovely selection of homemade cakes and unusual soft drinks. We had the scampi with chips and peas and were pleased to find that it was good quality scampi, which along with the chips cooked to perfection. Whilst clearly cooked to order it arrived very quickly. We sat outside and there was a nice atmosphere whilst quiet and calm. I would highly recommend visiting this cafe and treating yourself to chips, as it will be worth the calories!! Thankyou to the two lovely ladies that looked after us! See you again! If you visit Mersea its probably because of the reputation of the great seafood along the beach. Yes it is great seafood however very expensive fish and chips around 12 pounds. However we walked along to east Mersea and discovered a lovely cafe THE SEAVIEW CAFE. Don't miss it. Along with the lightly battered fish which was plentiful, the excellent chips, mushy peas and what tasted like home made tartare sauce is was exceptional. We sat with a lovely view in the sunshine enjoying this tasty dish. BRITISHMATURECOUPLE Colchester, United Kingdom

Excellent, best in Essex.

Had breakfast here with friends on Sunday Feb 10th. Have been before but had to write a review this time. Had the large breakfast, all cooked to perfection and looked brilliant served on a big oval plate, was absolutely stuffed but could've eaten more given the chance. Service was friendly and efficient, some of our party are a little fussy but the order was taken and delivered to the table with no fuss at all (as it should be, but not always the case in other restaurants/cafes I could mention). Will be a regular thing for my family, especially on cold sunny winter mornings. The view is fantastic and a brisk walk on the adjacent West Mersea beach blows away the cobwebs. Highly recommended, please give them a visit. Aidybatch

Very smart little seaside cafe by a nice beach. The cafe has been nicely decorated over the winter and now matches the smartest beach huts in England which are the backdrop to the beach. Only go there for coffee and snacks but the food looks really good, all local produce. Mark and BJ Chelmsford, England

Caravan Site Finder

Of all the campsites we've ever stayed on, this one takes the crown for us. We are used to the standards of the Caravan Club, but my wife, children and I felt Seaview set new standards for others to aspire to. Seaview is beautifully laid out with space enough for touring caravans, tents, and their permanent sited static vans. The icing on the cake is the Woodlands Lodge Development with fully landscaped grounds, and walled electric gate entrance makes you feel in the hart of luxury. The site is ideally located to visit many local attractions whether it be visiting the local village, or just escaping to the country with its magnificent views and lovely walks. All in all if you want a camp site to remember...this is the one. Thank you so much Andrew and Georgina for all your efforts. Without a shadow of a doubt you have a 5 Star rating from us. Ps. see you next year. John and Dorothy
